Making Every Breath Count: Pastor Mike Olsen
There are undoubtedly a number of horrifyingly cruel diseases out in the world. The one affecting Louisville pastor Mike Olsen is robbing him of the breath he needs to keep on preaching, but he hasn’t let it slow him down.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) was just recently recognized by the American Lung Association as one of the most deadly lung diseases. With no known cure, IPF causes degradation of the lung tissue over time. Olsen, diagnosed with IPF several years ago, never smoked a day in his life, but he can hardly catch his breath without a steady stream of oxygen supporting his system through a clear tube under his nose.
Despite that fact, Olsen has dedicated himself to bringing more aware to IPF and the 30,000 – 40,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States every year. He has been on countless news programs and even filmed a video in Hollywood, and he keeps fighting every day as he waits on the list for a double-lung transplant.
“I may be a pastor, but it doesn’t mean I have a halo,” Olsen said. “God isn’t finished with me just yet.”
His humility and perseverance, as well as his candid humor on Facebook, are what make Mike Olsen one of our everyday heroes. To honor his fight, we created a custom wooden bow tie just for him – a pair of lungs with wings. Check it out:
